Infrared measurement is practical when the object is hot, moving, live, or difficult to access. Here, the temperature can be read from a distance, and the built-in single-point laser helps to pinpoint the area being measured. This makes the instrument suitable for, among other things, motors, insulation, fuses, pipes, and other components where you often want a quick answer without stopping operations.
Contact measurement is used when you want a direct temperature measurement with a K-type probe. Standard mini-connector K-type thermocouples can be connected, and a Velcro pipe probe is also included for pipes and similar tasks. This makes the instrument useful when both surface temperature, ambient temperature, and more precise contact measurements need to be solved with the same tool.
The Fluke 561 covers a wide temperature range and is therefore relevant for many service and maintenance tasks.
