INSTRUMENT CMAD 1614

The CMAD 1614 is an absorption common mode choke for measurements on cables. It is used to attenuate unwanted common mode currents, also called braid currents, on either coaxial cables or unshielded cable bundles. In practice, this means it helps make measurements of field-bound noise emissions more reproducible.

Its design is simple and practical for the test environment: several precision-cut ferrite half-toroids are housed in a grey plastic casing, and the floating ferrite parts in the lid ensure good contact between the ferrite surfaces. The two quick-release fasteners on the side allow it to be opened and closed in seconds, so the cable can be inserted without disconnecting plugs or breaking the connection.

This is particularly relevant in EMC and measurement contexts, where cables can often affect the result more than expected. Therefore, the type is also specified in CISPR 16-1-4, which recommends the use of absorption clamps for precisely this task.

The CMAD 1614 comes with an individually measured calibration certificate and can be calibrated with the optional CAL CMAD 1614 adapter. This makes it suitable for professional measurement setups where documentation and repeatable results are important.

Typical Applications

  • Measurement of field-bound noise emissions
  • Attenuation of common mode currents on coaxial cables
  • Attenuation of common mode currents on unshielded cable bundles
  • Setups where cables need to be connected without interrupting the connection
